On July 17, 1894, Alice Macdonald of Notting Hill, London, patented a method for producing sulphate of lead pigment without the need for washing. Her process involved filter pressing the fumes into a paste (or using them dry), then heating the material in air to burn off or oxidize impurities, resulting in a dense, white pigment.
