On April 30, 1940, Rosalyn Litschgi of Saint Louis, Missouri, obtained a patent for a covered ash tray. Designed to accommodate cigarettes, cigars, and the stubs, her invention featured inclined grid rests that kept wrappers dry and allowed stubs to drop easily into the receptacle below.
