On September 30, 1899, Melinda Stockham of Maindee, near Newport, devised a novel method for producing coffee without chicory. Her mixture combined bran, wheaten meal, icing sugar, and golden syrup, which were stirred together, baked, and ground to create a flavour resembling that of genuine coffee.
