On November 20, 1923, Melinda A. Starkey, a British citizen residing in Los Angeles, devised a novel device for protecting fruit while harvesting it from trees. Her invention consisted of a pair of snips with curved jaws and curved ends designed to shield the fruit from accidental cuts, especially when picking oranges.
