On January 31, 1939, Gabrielle Jeanne Pierrette Hissarlian-Lagoutte of Grenchen patented a combined watch and compass that placed the compass needle and watch hands on the same axis inside a standard-sized case. The design reduced magnetic interference between the compass and the watch mechanism, allowing both functions to operate accurately without increasing the watch’s size.
