On November 26, 1906, Franziska Zuza of Vienna patented a method for making down-filled comforters using coated feathers. By blowing a mixture of down and powdered adhesive into the fabric and then activating the coating with heat or steam, her process allowed even filling while preventing dust loss and feather escape.
