On May 8, 1913, Elizabeth, Countess de Gasquet-James, née Tibbits Pratt, of Dresden, Germany, patented a novel method for producing fresh rations for military or travel use. Her invention involved placing fresh meat or vegetables inside an unbaked bread loaf, with the dough layered in concentrated meat extract to improve preservation and freshness during transport.
