On 25 October 1894, Amy Frances Davies, a Professional Shorthand Writer and Mechanician of Kensington, London, was awarded a patent for improvements in machinery used to manufacture plumbers’ leaden traps and bends. Her invention simplified and reduced the cost of existing lead trap and bend presses by adapting ordinary lead pipe presses and introducing innovative methods for regulating the flow of lead.
