On October 16, 1923, Rhesa G. DuBois, of East Orange, New Jersey, was awarded a patent for a novel golf-cup device. The invention featured a cylindrical cup that kept the flag-staff upright, prevented turf damage, and allowed easy ball retrieval and debris removal.
