On July 21, 1914, Nelle M. Peters of Chicago, Illinois, patented a one-piece, sleeveless garment designed to drape gracefully over the shoulders, giving the illusion of sleeves. Made from a single piece of fabric, it featured cleverly placed hooks and eyes to fasten the front and back, combining elegance with practical simplicity.
