On December 31, 1950, Livia Crittia of Milan invented a novel process to manufacture a plastic mass for products such as linoleum, molded items, and pressed goods. Her method involved cooking castor oil, sulfur, and tellurium chloride into a thick resin, then mixing in leather waste and silica to create a sheetable material with linoleum-like properties.
