On June 21, 1927, Katherine Lorella Heinz of Champaign, Illinois, was awarded a patent for a grain aerator that used the weight of falling grain to drive a system of vibrating screens. This design loosened and aerated the grain without external power, allowing sunlight and air to circulate through it.
