On August 13, 1898, Jeannie MacNeil, a golf ball maker from Glasgow, UK, was awarded a patent for inventing a novel golf ball. The ball was made from a combination of glue or gelatine, cork or leather, and bichromate of potash, pressed together in an appropriate mold and left to season.
