On November 15, 1921, three Italian sisters, Giuseppina Ducatto, Drosilla Ducatto, and Annetta Ducatto, patented a method for using raffia fiber to make furniture. Their process replaced straw and reed with durable, weather-resistant raffia, woven or braided by hand or machine.
