On March 23, 1895, Franziska von La Roche of Dillingen, Germany, invented an improved hat box for safely transporting trimmed ladies’ hats and bonnets without crushing them. Using shaped support blocks and spring clips, her design securely held multiple hats in place, making it especially useful for milliners sending hats to customers.
