On August 8, 1896, Ethel Spryde Browett, a resident of Coventry, United Kingdom, was awarded a patent for developing a novel belt that was easily adjustable due to the presence of straps at either end. The belt was specifically designed to be attached to a corset and could be loosened with minimal effort.
