On September 1, 1894, Emily Ayckbourn and Kate Clutterbuck, two spinsters of London, invented and patented a novel metal framing for children’s cubicules. Their design featured a foldable wire mattress, a door, and built-in fixtures for washing and storage, offering improved sanitation and ventilation.
