On April 21, 1894, Eliza Millar of Liverpool, England, was granted a patent for a novel laundry tool. Designed for use in domestic boilers or coppers, the device featured a stick with a perforated head, allowing water or soap suds to flow through and circulate when pushed among fabrics.
