On November 28, 1922, Clover Lewell Perkins of Highland Park, Illinois, patented an innovative newspaper design that reduced printing costs for classified advertisements. Her system separated classified ads into a smaller supplement distributed only to readers who requested it, using matching coupons to link the main paper and the supplement for accurate distribution and accounting.
