On August 20, 1914, Ana Ballen de Guzman of Paris patented a device for transporting sick or infirm patients, particularly for safely lowering them into a bathtub. The mobile frame used a cable-and-pulley system operated by a hand crank, allowing a single caregiver to raise or lower a patient securely and with ease.
