On January 4, 1949, Amina R. Day of Los Angeles, California, patented a compartmented hatbox with both fixed and removable radial partitions. Her design allowed travelers to store multiple hats securely in adjustable compartments, preventing crushing while keeping the box lightweight and inexpensive to produce.
