On June 27, 1939, Albina Cerveny of Highland Park, Michigan, was awarded a patent for developing a novel brake indicator. Her invention alerted drivers when the emergency or parking brake was still engaged as the engine started, helping to prevent damage to the vehicle and improve safety.
