On April 30, 1935, Abigail C. Mullendore of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was granted a patent for developing a novel hat designed to minimize hair disarrangement. Her invention promised to provide an inexpensive tool that could be conveniently carried around to keep hair in place.
