On May 31, 1931, Abele Catti of Locarno, Switzerland, was awarded a patent for inventing a novel switching device for electric irons. The device featured a toggle switch that, by means of a plug, could be connected to a support to keep the iron in an upright position or in a working position, depending on the need.
