On July 20, 1895, Abbie B. Galloway of East Somerville, Massachusetts, received a patent for an improved riding habit for women. It combined a divided skirt and trousers with detachable fasteners that kept fabric clear of bicycle wheels, while maintaining the appearance of a conventional skirt.
